The link to the article about the Star Spangled Banner that John Legend included in his first tweet gave a sobering account of the song’s anti African-American origins. While the first verse is the only verse that is sung before sports games and other ceremonies, the other verses have words that are much more controversial. Two lines in particular have started a whole new controversy regarding whether the song should be replaced as the National Anthem: “No refuge could save the hireling and slave
